Computer Tips [ Protect Your Email Address + Find Those Lost Menus + Choose the Right Lens ] 10/07/08

Quick Tips

Display Those Menus

Are you among the many who use Internet Explorer 7? If so, you've probably been dealing with some changes from the earlier versions ever since. Of course, there's nothing wrong with change, but sometimes, it can be down right frustrating! One of the main things that changed with IE 7 was the disappearance of the File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools and Help menus. In IE 6, you could always count on those menus being available, but for some reason, they are hidden in version 7. So, is there any way you can get them back? There sure is!

If you want to get them back temporarily (maybe you only need them for a quick second), just hit the Alt key on your keyboard and the menus will appear. Once they show up, you can do whatever you need to do with them. You need to be sure not to click your mouse anywhere else though, because if you do, they will disappear again.

Now, if you want the menus to be available permanently, just click on the Tools button and choose Menu Bar. That's all there is to it. Another way of getting them back is to hit the Alt key (the temporary way) and when the menus appear, go directly to View, Toolbars, Menu Bar. Either way, all of those helpful menus will stay put for good. Also, if you ever want to hide them again, just reverse the above actions and you'll be all set. It's just another way you can bring the comfort of IE 6 to IE 7!

They Do Exist!!!

Finally, After Years Of Searching-

I Have Found Them...

The Perfect Headphones!

Magnificent! Perfect! Comfortable! Crystal Clear! Amazing! Fabulous! These are just a few of the words that I could use to describe these amazing Sentry Headphones.Wait until these headphones wrap around your ears, then you will know what I am talking about! These headphones are simply the best headphones that I have EVER come across!!! I will never wear another earbud or headset again!

Personally, I hate earbuds! In fact, they convinced me that I have odd shaped ears. Those things are simply not comfortable and they are always falling out of my ears. You should see me on my morning jog, I am constantly plugging an earbud (normally the right ear) back into my ear, just to have it fall out again within a few steps! Then, by the end of my jog, both of my ears are sore after those things have been sticking in them for about 30 mins!

Because I hate the earbuds so much, I have been searching for a headset that is lightweight, comfortable, and will stay on my ears while I run! Well, let me tell you, I have searched for years! Then, just the other day, when I thought I had given up and that I would have to settle for those stupid earbuds the rest of my life, I came across these headphones. I said it once, and I will say it again, these headphones are wonderful!

First, they are really lightweight. Like earbuds, these headphones don't have that annoying, heavy, strap that wrap around your head to make them stay in place. However, like headphones, this pair has padded earpieces that comfortably rest on the outside of your ears.

So, you are probably wondering how they stay in place? Well, these headphones have nifty little hooks that hook onto the back of your ears as if you were wearing glasses. These little rubber hooks secure the headphones in place and are extremely comfortable. Today, I wore them all day at work, and forgot that I had them on!!! I was shocked!!!

And the quality of the sound could not be better! You will not miss a single beat with these headphones! Even better, the head phone jack works with my computer, my iPod, and my AM/FM radio! These headphones could not get any better!

Oh- wait! Yes they can... with the price! For just $12.97 and US Shipping is Free. Let me tell ya, I have searched so long for the perfect headphones that I would pay triple that amount. When I saw the price I picked up two sets just for myself- just incase anything horrendous happens and I need a new set. Check out this site for more information!!!

And- with USB 2.0, you know your data is going to transfer extremely quickly!!!!

However, wouldn't it be nice if you could store everything on one flash drive and go? Well, with this 8GB flash drive, you will be able to store more information that you could ever imagine. Do you know how MASSIVE 8GB is? Well, my iPod holds 8GB worth of data, and I put the 850 songs that were on my laptop onto my iPod as well as 2 audio books and about 100 pictures, and I still have over 2GBs worth of space available on my iPod. WOW!!!

So, you are probably thinking, "Why do I need a flash drive that stores that much stuff?" Well, this 8GB flash drive is perfect for backing up your important pictures, music, videos, documents, and so much more. Q:
Is there any way I can find out if my e-mail address is being used on public Web sites? I've been getting more spam than normal lately and I wonder if that could be why. Please help!

A:
Oh, I'm so glad you asked! I actually get this question all the time and I do apologize for neglecting it up until now. I know you all deal with spam e-mail on a daily basis (some more than others) and even though it's sometimes hard to figure out why, there are a few things you can check on. One of the biggest causes, as stated in today's question, is giving out your e-mail address on public Web sites and not even knowing it. And that's exactly what we're going to go over today. So, without further ado, let's get started!

People ask me all the time if there's a Web site they can use that scans their system and tells them every single place their e-mail address is used. That's a great idea, but unfortunately, the answer is no. To my knowledge, there aren't any Web sites designed to do that, but you can get a little assistance from your favorite search engine. Just choose whichever search engine you'd like to use (Google, Yahoo!, etc.) and search for your e-mail address. From your results, you will be able to see which sites have access to your address.

For example, I used Google and typed in erin@worldstart.com. I received quite a few results, but they were mostly for other publications that sometimes use the computer tips I write (with permission, of course!) And while it's perfectly fine for other people to use my tips, it could be where some of my spam comes from. It's hard to tell, but at least I now have a general idea of what might be happening.

If your e-mail address showed up on several different Web sites, you might want to take a few seconds to think about all of the sites you visit. Do you do a lot of online shopping? Are you a member of any social networking sites? Do you sign up for newsletters, etc. regularly? If so, you were probably required to fill out some type of a form, am I right? I mean, every time you order something online, you're asked for your e-mail address. Every time you sign up for a free newsletter, you're asked to give your e-mail address. Every time you create a profile on a social networking site, again, you're asked for your e-mail address. It's a very common thing to do these days, but each time, you're running the risk of having your e-mail address published on a public site.

Now, I'm not saying every Web site does that, but it does happen. And it's one of the main reasons why you might be getting so much spam e-mail. For your own safety, you should never intentionally post your e-mail address on the Web. I know it's required by a lot of Web sites and that's fine, but you should stop and make sure you trust the site before you type it in. Luckily, a lot of Web sites are designed to keep your personal information private and obviously, those are the sites you should be using (WorldStart is one of those sites!)

In conclusion, if you weren't happy with the results you received when you searched for your e-mail address, you may want to reconsider the sites you use. Look through your results and end your connection with any that might be sending you spam. Also, keep a close eye on the spam you do get. You might be able to figure out where it's coming from and stop it in its tracks that way as well. It's a good idea to search for your e-mail address from time to time, just to make sure you're not being added to any spam lists. It's just one more way you can keep yourself safe while using the Web!

MS Office

Vertical Alignment Choices

Did you know that you can set the vertical alignment for a MS Word document just the way you want it?

That is, you can tell Word whether to align the text at the top of the page, the bottom of the page, the center of the page or to justify the text on the page.

That could come in very handy if you're trying to accommodate some weird spacing or if you're simply looking for the "finished" look (for full pages to go from top to bottom margins). It could save you a bit of pain from the headache of extra spacing, margin adjustments and the endless work created when you're trying to "move" text and leave white space.

Interested?

Then let's get to work!

To set the vertical alignment in older versions of Word, simply go to the File menu, Page Setup choice.

In Word 2007, you need to click on the down arrow in the Page Setup section under the Page Layout tab on the ribbon.

When the Page Setup window opens, go to the Layout tab.

Use the pull down menu to make your selection.

  • Top alignment is the default and it will align all text starting at the top margin.

  • Bottom alignment will align all text on the page with the bottom margin.

  • Center alignment will align all text around the center of the page.

  • Justify will take full pages and add extra space between lines to ensure that the text fills from the top margin to the bottom margin. Partial pages of text will still align to the top.

When you've made your decision, click OK.

Poof. Your pages are aligned as needed, with absolutely no pain!

"Man, I Have To Replace These Batteries AGAIN!"

Sick Of Constantly Replacing Batteries In Your Wireless Mouse?

$$$$ Recharge Them And Save Yourself Tons of $$$$

Use This Amazing, Wireless Mouse!

I love wireless mice. Not only do they really free up room on your desktop, but, with the optical technology, these mice are extremely precise. But, the one downfall I have with my wireless mouse is that I am always changing the batteries- and boy, let me tell you, it gets expensive. We all know batteries aren't cheap! Have you looked down the battery aisle recently? Yikes! And when you are constantly replacing burnt out batteries, those costs add up quickly!

Besides, do you know how frustrating it is when you are in the middle of a project and the batteries in your mouse die? Then you have to scavenge all around your house, digging through each "junk drawer" hoping to find two batteries with enough juice in them to get you through your project. And who really wants to take time to do that?

That is why when we came across this awesome mouse, we knew we just had to share it with you. I was so excited about this mouse, that I begged Steve to get one for everyone here at WorldStart. And we all love them!!

This mouse is both wireless and rechargeable. With this mouse, you get the freedom of a wireless mouse without the expense of having to purchase new batteries every few weeks. Once it dies, just pop it on the charger for a few minutes and you are all set. That sure beats buying and searching for batteries!!!

Plus, this mouse is one of the best we have sold. It has a very elegant design and five programmable buttons, including a wheel which makes navigation quick and easy. With its optical technology, this mouse is extremely precise and will work on just about any surface!

Oh, and lets discuss comfort! This mouse is amazingly comfortable. Whether you are on the computer all day or only for a few minutes, everyone needs a comfortable mouse that will fit your hand nicely. We know hands come in many shapes and sizes, but this mouse is comfortable for them all. Personally, I have very small hands, and I couldn't be more happy with the comfort of this mouse in the palm of my hand. Oh the other hand, Gary, our tech guy, has larger hands, and he says this mouse is also extremely comfortable!!!

To recharge this mouse, all you have to do is plug it into the USB receiver and a little LED light will start to flash. Better yet, this mouse comes with Smart Power Management to really save energy, ultimately making your batteries last even longer! Now you have to admit, that is pretty cool.

But what is really cool is the price. For just $16.97 and US Shipping is FREE (plus, you get the free radio that is above!), you will enjoy this wireless, 5 button, rechargeable mouse. Check out the product page today!

Listen To Your iPod or MP3 Player In Your Car!

Awesome Deal On Wireless FM Transmitter!!

No Wiring - No Hassles!

Amazing Price Too! WOW!!

(Horror) Story Time!

Last Christmas Santa brought me an uber-cool iPod. I was so excited! I thought that this would be the best thing to take on long car rides! One problem, my car doesn't have an AUX drive to plug my iPod or Mp3 player into.

So, to solve this problem, I went out to a local retail store and saw countless other people, just like me, in the aisle desperately searching for a way to play MP3's & iPods through a car radio. But this isn't all people were buying. Many customers were also buying brand new stereo systems that hooked up to an MP3 player or iPod. After all, who really wants to burn a CD anymore?

So that day, I walked out of the retail store with a $50.00, bulky plastic thing that plugged into my Car Cigarette Lighter and an iHome, which is a MP3 Stereo compatible only with iPods! The "extra" equipment just to play my MP3's ended up costing me a small fortune!

And let me tell you, worrying about all the messy cords frustrates me. I am replacing both of these with the GXP Wireless FM Transmitter.

This Wireless FM Transmitter is Amazing! This little guy is super-affordable and incredibly easy to use! Just plug it into ANY iPod or MP3 player! The signal picks up great in my car, and my antenna is in the back! I was amazed with how clear it sounded. It actually sounded 100X better than the one that cost me $50.00!!!

No longer will you be limited to just the earphones, a car adapter, or an expensive MP3 stereo! With the FM Transmitter, you can take it anywhere. It works with any FM Radio! There are even 12 different frequency selections to choose from, so the music will never cut out! And, there are suction cups to mount the transmitter, making it totally hands free- perfect for driving!

Your Cost? We have a one day only special for you today!!!! This awesome transmitter is just $12.97 and US Shipping is FREE!, and for ordering today, you also get the free radio!! Be smarter than I was, and save yourself a whole lot of time and money!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4370

PS: Enjoy the changing of the seasons? This FM Transmitter will be great for those long car rides as you enjoy the changing colors of autum! Enjoy!

Special Note - Hey everyone, Steve here. Once again, thanks to everyone who ordered this software yesterday! Our sales were through the roof! If you missed your chance, you really gotta check this one out! I was braggin' about it to everyone (the people at the office, my neighbors, my family, everyone!)- it's just fantastic! Here's my take:

WOW!! You've Never Seen One Like This!

The Next Step In Anti-Virus, Firewalls, And Anti-Spyware!

Amazing Software Doesn't Slow You Down - And Stays Out Of The Way!

Super Smart AV Only Does Scans When YOU'RE Not Working!

Outstanding New Firewall Locks Your Computer Down When You're Away!

Hourly Updates! Unlimited Tech Support! Install On Up To 3 PCs!

WOW! I can't wait to share this one with ya! We just scored an amazing deal on my new favorite software - Iolo System Shield! Let me tell ya, this is NOT your run-of-the-mill Internet Security Suite! This does an amazing job of keeping your computer safe from hackers, spyware, and viruses - but read on, because the way this is implemented is far superior to ANY software like this I've used in the past! This really isn't your typical security suite - and you're gonna love it!  I am personally running this software on my computer and it's by far the best I've used! I can't tell you how impressed I am with this - if you value your safety - and system performance, you've got to check this out!

OK, first off, I know you're probably already running anti-virus, anti-spyware, and a firewall - so why do you want this? Well, the thing that impresses me the most with this software suite is the absolute speed it brings to the table! Not just in scanning and such, but the very real lack of system hogging it does. Most suites like this are horrible - they really slow your system to a crawl - not this one! I uninstalled all my previous security software and tired this instead - WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Frankly, there's a good chance that if you're currently using Norton, Mcafee, ect, when you replace them with this you're going to think you got a new computer! The difference is THAT dramatic! This speed-up alone is enough reason to switch if you ask me!

Next, I absolutely LOVE how this just runs in the background and stays out of the way. So many security programs love to tell you that they are updating your system, getting new virus definitions, scanning, whatever. It's an all day long affair of acknowledging boxes and virtually patting your software on the back, "Good boy - I'm glad you downloaded some updates!" Well, those annoyances are GONE with this - it just works in the background and updates itself when necessary without dozens of boxes telling you all about it - that alone was enough to make me switch! Of course, if it finds something serious, it'll let you know (all customizable too).

Oh, and let me tell you about the anti-virus - you're gonna love this! First, yes it keeps you safe from e-mail viruses, downloads, and monitors in the background - just like everyone's AV does. However, it's the little things that make you fall in love with this! First, don't you just HATE it when you're working on your computer and the stupid AV software comes up and starts a scan? Slows everything down - what a pain! This software will actually make sure the PC has been idle for a specified amount of time before it scans! It waits till you're away before it starts - is that cool or what??? Oh, and it pauses the scan if the PC starts getting used again! Again, this reason alone is enough to change! In fact, my wife read that and said, "Hey - I want this on my computer! My AV always starts scanning when I'm working!" So, one of my 3 installs is going there!

In addition, the anti-virus can be set to scan all files or just dangerous ones (saving time), can be set to scan all kinds of files, has HOURLY updates, can be set to scan when YOU want, and can even be set to exclude certain types of files if you want! Even scan incoming AND outgoing messages if you want - all fully customizable! Oh, and did I mention that it has a year of UNLIMITED tech support too in case you have trouble? WOW!!

Think that's great? Wait till you see the firewall! Blows Windows firewall away (along with every other firewall as far as I'm concerned)! First off, yes, it keeps hackers out - all firewalls do. But this also protects you in other ways. It can monitor when a program is trying to access the internet and send all your personal info to the mothership. That, to me, is HUGE! You never know if that program you just installed is completely trustworthy - so this keeps you safe!

Another fantastic idea that I'm really excited about is the "Idle Lock" - Get this - you can set it so that if you're not using the computer for a specified amount of time (set by you) that the network locks down - nothing can come in or out! I've always said the most secure internet connection is the one that's unplugged when not in use - and this does that!! Oh, and you can also lock your computer down with the press of a mouse if you like - right from the main page!

This can also show you how many attacks it has blocked, block the attacker's IP address for a specified (by you) amount of time, and has a lot of fully customizable options. Truth is though, that the default settings work fine for me! Oh, and again, this seems like it doesn't slow anything down at all - in fact, if you're using a different firewall, this will probably speed things up! I know one thing for sure, I'm installing this on my laptop for travel - it's just too dangerous to surf using wireless networks without it!

Finally, this also includes a fantastic anti-spyware program! Just like the rest of it, it's really fast, stays out of the way, and just does the job! It automatically updates and scanning is a breeze - and fast too! I don't think I've ever seen a spyware can that was soooo fast - and it did a great job! Found a few minor things that it easily fixed!

OK, that's the main stuff, but I also wanted to mention how much easier to use this is than most other security software. First off, I think 90% of the users out there can just install it and forget it - the default settings are really a nice balance and should work well for just about every computer out there. If you want to change stuff, it's really easy to do and the program has an excellent help file that, quite frankly, most users will never ever need!

The price? You're not going to believe this one - we're talking just $12.97 and US shipping is FREE! This is the current version and retails for $49.95 (check Iolo's site - it's not cheap), so $12.97 is an amazing deal. 1 Year worth of support and updates too! Oh, works on XP, Vista, & Win 2000!

Oh, and get this - it's a 3 user license!! So you can install this on up to 3 different computers! That's way less than $5.00 per computer! Grab a friend or two and have them chip in! For less than $5.00 per computer, you just can't go wrong! It's amazing and it's what I am going to be running from now on!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4583

PS - Seriously, this is simply the best Anti-virus, Anti-Spyware, and Firewall software I've ever used and it's going to be on my machine from now on. My computer is soooo much faster now after getting rid of the other bloated software package I had been using - and this just has soooo many great options! Don't miss out!

~Steve

Find Your Host

So, tell me, do you have your very own Web site? I'm talking about a site you created yourself and designed all on your own. If you said yes, let me now ask you this: do you have a host for your site? You know, a place on the World Wide Web where your site can live. If you haven't thought about that yet, you're really going to benefit from reading through the tip on our homepage today. It gives you all the information you need to know about finding a host for your Web site and getting everything set up. It's a definite must read!

The Longevity Game

Okay, so this may seem a little random, but would you like to know how long you're going to live? I know it can't be 100 percent accurate, but with a little test that asks you about your health, your family background and some of the things you've done in your life, you can calculate what age you'll live to be. Like I said, it's hard for something like that to be spot on, but it's pretty interesting to see what it comes up with. If you'd like to give it a try, simply check out the cool site on our homepage today. It's all right there waiting for you!

Here's the link you need: http://www.worldstart.com/ Enjoy!

Tip of the Day

New Greasemonkey Script: Video Embed

It’s been awhile since I’ve written about a good Greasemonkey script, but I have a great one for you today! It seems as if the YouTube craze has taken over, doesn't it? Every blog and Web site you go to has at least a few videos on it. Some Web sites even have an embedded video player, which is really helpful, but I’m sure you’ve stumbled across a site that only gives you the video links instead. Am I right? Well, the Greasemonkey script I have for you today allows you to convert those links into a video player. Sound like a good idea? I thought you might think so. Let's check it out!

1.) As always, you first need to have Firefox and the Greasemonkey add on installed.

2.) To get the Video Embed script, head on over to this Web site and click on the Install This Script button.

3.) The script will then install and you’re done! Now, let’s test it out.

4.) If you have the script installed right, you should see a little YouTube player, like this.

5.) That's actually just a text link to a YouTube video, but with the Video Embed script installed, it’s automatically converted to a video player. Pretty nifty, huh?!

By the way, this script converts Google and Metacafe video links as well. Enjoy!

Choosing the Right Lens

Lenses are very sacred when it comes to digital photography. Without a proper lens, no picture you take will be worth anything. That's why choosing a lens is so important. There are two kinds of lenses: prime and zoom. Most compact cameras have zoom lenses, whereas most professional cameras have prime lenses. The difference between them is rather easy to understand. Prime lenses have one focal length and can be used for specialist photography. On the other hand, zoom lenses are great for general photography, because they have a wide range of focal lengths.

Of course, there are other tangible benefits from using both types of lenses. Like any field, both have their merits and demerits. Below are a few guidelines you can use when choosing the right lens for your photography!

You may want to think about some of the following features when choosing a prime lens:

1.) Superior images: Prime lenses generally offer high quality pictures, because they are largely made for professionals who want to be perfect in their chosen field. What they offer is priceless: clean, crisp and precise shots.

2.) Economical: There are two sides to prime lenses. While there's the nifty 50mm variety that comes cheap, there are others that come with a higher price. Generally though, prime lenses are cheaper, because unlike a zoom lens, they don’t have too many moving parts.

3.) Lightweight: Since prime lenses lack complex construction, they are smaller and lighter as well.

4.) Faster: If you're constantly taking pictures in low light conditions, prime lenses offer a great way to capture your subjects faster (in terms of aperture). Both the 85mm and 50mm lenses are fast and allow you to shoot without a flash.

Now, here are some features to consider when choosing a zoom lens:

1.) Portable: Prime lenses might be lightweight, but zoom lenses are lighter in a different context. If you have to carry a range of prime lenses for different focal lengths to suit different kinds of photography, you might as well just carry one zoom lens that can deliver all of those angles at once.

2.) Dust: If you use several primes, you will have to change the lenses more frequently than with zooms. Every time you change the lens, you're running the risk of letting dust surround the body and sensors.

3.) Affordable: It's true that some zoom lenses are more expensive than prime lenses, but you have to look at the cost benefits. If you had to buy three prime lenses to meet your photography needs, the sum total would come up to as much or even more than what one zoom lens would cost.

4.) Flexible: This is the best part of a zoom lens. You don’t need to constantly change your prime lenses to shoot at different focal lengths. You can simply adjust the zoom and you're ready. That's very ideal for taking surprise pictures or quick shots where you don’t have time to change your lenses. It's also great when you have to take close-up pictures from a distance.

Here are a few additional options for lenses:

1.) If you have a Canon DSLR, a couple of 50mm lenses would be great for low light conditions. In addition, you could buy a 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens. It's not only good for macro shooting, but it's also great for portraits. If you're going to buy a zoom lens, go for one or more of these: 17-40mm, 24-105mm or a 70-200mm.

2.) You could go for a 70-200mm zoom, because the focal range is too big to cover with several primes. In addition, you could buy a 28mm and 50mm prime lens for lower focal lengths.

3.) For general photography, it's best to go with a 24-105mm mounted lens. Or, if you want to get more creative, you may want to consider a 50mm prime lens.

4.) For those of you who are beginners, a basic zoom lens or a cheap 50mm prime will do. You can then take it from there.

Since there are advantages to both prime and zoom lenses, the best way to make the most of them is to own one of each and use them accordingly. That way, you're not deprived in either direction. It really all just depends on what kind of photography you do and how passionate you are about your work. Prime lenses are definitely faster, but zoom lenses are more versatile, so you just have to figure out what will work the best for you. Happy lens shopping!

When you receive a message, the service texts your phone to let you know the number that called. You can then check the voicemail by either getting on the Web site or by calling your Inbox with the number they gave you when you signed up.

On the site, you’ll sign in with your phone number and the password you created during registration. You’ll be logged right in to your Inbox where you can retrieve your messages.

Here's October's wallpaper. It's all free, so enjoy!

Lamar Valley Trees

I took this a couple weeks ago in Yellowstone. The trees looked too good to pass up!

Undine Falls

Yeah, strange name, but good falls! I'd like to say I had to hike 12 miles into the backcountry to get this shot, but this was taken probably about 10 yards from the parking lot. Worth the quick stop!

Antelope on the Lookout

This guy was busy chasing around a couple girls, so he wasn't too concerned about me. I was able to get pretty close and he was fun to watch. That's for sure!
