Computer Tips [ Warning - Fake Antivirus Alert! + History of Windows + Make Cranky CDs Happy ] 09/24/08

Computer Tipswww.worldstart.com No, this isn't Steve. You can tell because Steve never wears a suit :-)

Quick Tips

ISO Images

Ever wonder what the term ISO involves? You may know it has something to do with the digital world, but what exactly does it entail? Well, I'm here to fill you in today!

First of all, an ISO image is known as a .iso file and it's just another term for a disk image or any optical disk image. It's basically an exact copy of an already existing file, which is why it's commonly associated with CD and DVD burning. An ISO file is usually created through special software that allows you to actually create the exact copy of a CD or DVD's contents. Along with that, you're able to edit the files as needed. So, for example, if you ever burn a copy of a music CD, you're creating an ISO image in the process. That obviously holds true for anything you burn onto a disk (music, videos, pictures, documents and so on).

Now, you can do that with any type of burning software. Your computer probably came with some type of program already installed on it or maybe you went out and bought something different. Either way, if you have a burner and the software to go along with it, you've been creating ISO images all along. Cool, huh?!

Computers 101

Q:
I was just wondering about the history of Windows. When did it all get started? Do you have any facts you can share?

A:
There are some pretty interesting facts available out there today. This is a little different question than we normally get, but it's kind of fun, so let's learn about the history of Windows!

You use your computer every day and your Windows operating system is always there to help you get your stuff done. Well, Windows started doing that in November of 1983 and it sold for $100.00 back then. (That's the year I was born. Wow!) On down through the 80s, Microsoft kept coming out with different versions. Windows 1.0 in 1985 and 2.0 in 1987 and they both sold for $100.00 as well.

Next, there was Windows 386 and 286 and in 1990, Microsoft announced Windows 3.0, with the full version being sold for $149.95. They even had an upgrade version for $79.95. Version 3.1 came in April of 1992 and there were more than one million copies of it sold in the first two months of its release. In August of 1993, Windows NT 3.1 was released and there was record of over 25 million licensed users by the end of 1993.

There were a couple more years of Windows NT (3.5 and 3.51) and then finally in 1995, Windows 95 was featured and it sold more than one million copies in only four days. Were you one of those buyers?!

Next, Microsoft released NT 4.0 and then a couple versions of CE until the grand feature of Windows 98 in June of 1998. The second edition (98 SE) then came out in May of 1999. Windows 2000 came in February of that year, closely followed by Windows ME (Millennium) in June of 2000.

Of course, next came Windows XP in October 2001 and by that time, Microsoft was ever so popular and just about everyone was using one version or another of Windows. Microsoft came out with the Windows Server 2003 in March 2003 and then Windows Vista in January 2007. That's where we stand right now, but as you may have heard, Microsoft is working on yet another operating system, Windows 7, which is planned for release in early 2010. And now you know all about the history of Windows!

MS Office

Bits and Pieces

Did you know you can choose to format only part of what's in an MS Excel cell?

Maybe you have some text in a cell and you need to bold a couple of words. Or, perhaps a different font style or size is required for just a portion of the cell's contents.

Either way, what do you do?

Can it even be done?

The answer you're looking for is yes, right? Well, you're in luck, because it can be done and it's much easier than you may think.

If you simply select a cell and make formatting changes, they will apply to everything in the cell, so it's going to take just a little bit more than that.

You'll either need to double click on the cell to get the cursor into the cell contents for editing or you can select the cell and then click into the formula bar for editing.

Once you've got a cursor within the cell contents, highlight exactly the portion you need to format.

With your partial contents highlighted, you can make formatting changes as usual. You can use the formatting options on the toolbars/ribbon or use the Format menu, Format Cells choice (Ctrl + 1). Excel 2007 users can get to the Format Cells dialogue window with either the Ctrl + 1 shortcut or by clicking on the down arrow in the bottom right corner of the Font, Alignment or Number sections under the Home tab on the ribbon.

Now, I'm sure a few of you are thinking "Format Cells? I thought the idea was to format only part of the cell." Don't worry! In this situation, the Format Cells window changes will only apply to the highlighted contents, not the whole cell.

That's all there is to it!

The trick is to highlight only the parts to be changed and you will soon be formatting only the "bits and pieces" of your cell contents!

21,000 Germs Per Square Inch

On YOUR Desktop!

Now That's Just Nasty!

"A microbiologist at the University of Arizona counted bacteria on workplace surfaces for a study sponsored by The Clorox Co., makers of Clorox bleach. Office toilet seats had 49 germs per square inch, he found. But desktops had almost 21,000 germs per square inch. Desks, phones, computer keyboards and mice are key germ transfer points because people touch them so often..." ~ CNN.com

YUCK! Is That Disgusting or What??

Kill Those Nasty Germs In Seconds!!!

Ultraviolet Technology Makes It Quick, Easy and Chemical Free!

WOW! We had a tremendous response to our UV Light yesterday! Thank You to everyone who ordered! You'll be able to kill off those 21,000 germs in no time! If you missed out, this is one product I think everyone who wants a safe, germ-free environment should have! At work, home, or anywhere - this will help keep the germs down!

Now I wouldn't classify myself as a "germophobe", but when I read studies like the one above, I think I could easily become one! When you stop and think about all the surfaces you touch or come into contact with on a daily basis that dozens (or hundreds) of other people touch, you know there are TONS of icky, nasty germs crawling around out there! Especially this time of year, the cold and flu season (yuck!).

So, when I recently received a sample of this portable Disinfecting UV Scanner, I thought I'd research it a little to see what it's all about before sharing it with you all. After all, I'm like you - I was thinking, "could a light actually kill off germs?" That sounded like a fantasy to me too - well, I was REALLY surprised about this amazing device! Check this out:

"UV-C light is germicidal - i.e., it deactivates the DNA of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens and thus destroys their ability to multiply and cause disease. Specifically, UV-C light causes damage to the nucleic acid of microorganisms by forming covalent bonds between certain adjacent bases in the DNA. The formation of such bonds prevent the DNA from being unzipped for replication, and the organism is unable to reproduce. In fact, when the organism tries to replicate, it dies."
~ Ultraviolet.com (You can read more about it by clicking here.)

So, in a "nutshell", you can easily disinfect and sterilize just about any object you come into contact with by "swiping" the UV Scanner over it for about 10-20 seconds. This includes bacteria and viruses such as: E-Coli, Bacillus Subtilin, Staphylococcus Auras, Hepatitis, Influenza and many other viruses as well! The kill rate is greater than 99.9%. I think that's pretty amazing, don't you?

Here's the great thing, this Disinfecting UV Scanner is extremely portable! It only measures about 5" folded and when it's fully opened it's about 9" in length. It weighs less than a 1/2 lb. and even comes with a handy carrying pouch as well! You can take this with you anywhere and everywhere (discreetly if you choose) and keep bacteria and other harmful viruses away! Great for public bathrooms!

This isn't just for you desktop and keyboard either! It's safe and effective to use on your dishes, toothbrush, cell phone, kids toys, car interior, door handles, etc. You get the idea ;-) Everyone here has been scanning their office from top to bottom since we got this in - it's still working on the same set of batteries too! You get about 4,000 scans with this on just one set - pretty amazing, huh?

When I was checking this item out, I saw that most similar products like this go for no less than $70.00 - OUCH! - some are closer to $100.00 - yikes! Well get this, your cost is just $16.97 and that includes FREE shipping in the US! Just think about all the money you spend on those little bottles of hand sanitizer every month - this will pay for itself in no time at all!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4043

PS - Don't spend $70.00 elsewhere ~ do yourself, your coworkers and your family a favor and pick up one for your home and/or office today! You'll thank me later ;-)

Today's Feature

Antivirus 2009

Just a few weeks ago, Erin wrote about a fake antivirus program called XP Antivirus 2008. That program forces itself onto your computer and starts causing all kinds of trouble.

Now, it looks like there's another program out there doing the exact same thing. I have received several phone calls and e-mails about a program called Antivirus 2009. That program does the same thing XP Antivirus 2008 did. If you go to an infected Web site, you'll be bombarded with pop ups asking you to install the program. It will seem like there's no way to get rid of the pop ups besides installing the program.

First of all, do not install Antivirus 2009. If you go to a site that's trying to make you install it, you should close your Web browser immediately. If you need to, press Ctrl + Alt + Del on your keyboard and click on the End Task button. If that doesn't work, shut your computer down. Do whatever it takes to get rid of the pop ups, but do not install the program.

Antivirus 2009 is not only infecting computers, but it's also infecting Web sites. It will gain access to a site and then spread to users who visit that site. It will also change the site so that it gets better search results and appears under searches for antivirus software and virus removal. Keep an eye out for sites that offer it and stay away from them! It will take time before those sites are repaired and back to normal.

If you're already infected with Antivirus 2009, there is some good news! It looks like there's a pretty simple way to remove the bug. All you need is a program called Malware Bytes Anti-Malware. The basic version is free and you can download it right here.

Install the program and then run the Quick Scan. (Note: The Quick Scan isn't necessarily quick. It took nearly 30 minutes on my computer). After the scan is complete, a message will pop up and tell you it's done. Click OK.

Next, you will see a list of all the malware it found. They should all have checkmarks next to them. Just click on the Remove Selected button and it will remove all of them for you.

After that, a page will pop up telling you exactly what it did. You can save it if you want, but you don't have to.

That should be it. Just close the Malware Bytes program and the Antivirus 2009 bug should be gone. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends!

Posting is really easy. On the green bar, you’ll find a blank text box where you can just start typing. When you’re done, simply click on Add Entry.

To upload an image, MP3 or a document, just click on the Upload button, select it from where you have it saved on your computer and then click on the Upload button once more.
