Session Restore Intervals As you may recall, last week, I told you about the Session Restore feature found in the Firefox Web browser. (If you happened to miss that article, you can read it here). After that tip ran in the newsletter, I saw a posting on WorldStart's message board that took the Session Restore function one step further. So, if you've ever used the Session Restore feature, you're really going to like what I have for you today. And it's all thanks to message board user "HARLEY." Let's check it out! Here's the deal: you like using the Session Restore to save your work in Firefox, but does it save it often enough? Do you even know how often your sessions are updated? I mean, if they're only saved every five minutes, that's not going to help you out much if your browser suddenly crashes. Luckily, there's a way to change the time interval for how often your sessions are restored. That's right, you can pick your own time to guarantee your work is saved on a regular basis. Here's how! Open up your Firefox browser and type "about:config" (without the quotes) into the address bar at the top and hit Enter. On the next screen that comes up, look for the Filter box and type in "browser.sessionstore.interval." You should then see one entry come up. Double click on that and in the box, type in the time interval you'd like to use. If you want your work saved every 10 seconds, type in 10000. If you want it even shorter than that, type in 5000 for five seconds. Want it to be a little longer? Try 30000 for 30 seconds or 60000 for a minute. Just keep in mind that the interval is measured in milliseconds, so you'll need to type the time in accordingly. Then just click OK when you're done. Either way you go, your Firefox work will now be saved when you want it and not a moment too late! ~ Erin Don't stop now! Make sure you keep reading to learn how you can start living a printer gibberish free life, find out how you can use the Find/Replace feature in MS Excel even more to your advantage and learn how to go about getting your iPod up to date. Also, be sure to stay safe by reading this week's security article thanks to Gary and of course, don't miss out on Amanda's Cool Site of the Day!

I gotta tell ya - I'm REALLY (REALLY) EXCITED about this one! We just got Office Suite 2007 in stock (powered by OpenOffice) and let me tell ya - this thing is just incredible! It not only has EVERY feature you'd want in an office suite, it's almost a give-away price too! First off, this version is absolutely fantastic - I can't believe how impressed I continue to be with this software! I like it WAAYYY better than MS Office 2007! The power and ease of use is just phenomenal, really blowing MS Office right out of the water! What do you get? Well, EVERYTHING! This includes an absolutely fantastic word processor, a spreadsheet program on steroids (it just stomps Excel), presentation software that's second to none, an incredible drawing program, an advanced calculating program, and even a souped-up, high-end database! It can even create PDFs with the push of a button from most applications! WOW! To get even close to that with MS office you'd be looking at a small fortune!
I was using the the other day with a friend and for the first half-hour he thought we were using MS Office. Finally he looked at it a little closer and said, "Hey - what program is this?" I told him about it - and how inexpensive it was - and he was blown away! He couldn't believe that you could get a program like this for less than $15!! In fact, at first he thought I was kidding around. Well, he's got a few on the way for himself now! Why shell out $400 - $800 for MS Office when you can get this for a small fraction of the cost?
I know we're going to be using it here at the office when we have a new computer arrive. We used to shell out $400+ just so we could use Word and Excel! This is actually BETTER and the low cost is just unreal! Two of the main components are a top notch. You just gotta check out the Word Processor and a Spreadsheet Program. Both look a LOT like MS Word and MS Excel - in fact, if you just open it up and ignore the title bar, you'd swear that you were using an improved version of MS Office! It's THAT good. Oh, and like I said, this also comes with a phenomenal presentation program, drawing program, database and MORE! Let's look at the main two everyone use though - I just want to give you an idea why this program is sooo great! The Word Processor is just fantastic! I mean, it really has everything - a spell checker, grammar checker, thesaurus, auto text, tables, password protection, mail merge, easy font selection, auto numbering, etc. Plus, everything is very intuitive - it just seems like things are where you expect them to be and work the way you'd expect them to work. It's like the person who wrote the software actually uses the software!
It also has a fantastic built-in HTML editor for web pages that works seamless with the word processor, a really easy to use tool to insert shapes, and more! Here's what I love ~ you can turn your document into a PDF file with the click of one button ~ this is a terrific feature!! Oh, and wait till you see the Spreadsheet Program! It looks and functions just like MS Excel! Even the menus are virtually identical - everything you're used to doing in Excel can be done just as quickly here. TONS of built-in formulas, formatting, and functions at your fingertips. Create charts in just a few mouse clicks, filter data easily, send spreadsheets via e-mail, you name it, this can do it! You'll never need Excel again (or wan to use it for that matter)!!
The really cool thing is that all of this is 100% MS Office Compatible. It not only opens MS Office files (.doc, .xls) but can also save in that format! That way, you don't need to have MS Office to create or save MS Office documents. Cool huh? I tell ya what - I could go on and on about this one - it's really one of the most - if not the most - powerful office suites I've ever had the privilege of using! I'm really excited about having it on my computer and I can't recommend this highly enough! If you need office software, you just gotta give this a try! Oh, your cost? Glad you asked! Just $10.97 (again - Today Only!) and US shipping is FREE! It's almost a give-away for that kind of money - especially when you think that MS Office is $400-$800!! Try it, you'll thank me later :-) http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4134 PS - Make sure you give this a try! For $10.97, you just can't go wrong! It'll surprise ya - Heck, it still surprises me on a daily basis! I love it!
Q: A: It's most likely that your computer and your printer just aren't communicating properly. Even though your computer has not told your printer to print, it still does what it wants to do. So, you end up with several pages of odd looking characters, hearts, smilies and just plain garbage you don't want! The reason for the miscommunication goes back to when you first started a print job. When you send a document (or whatever you're printing) to the printer, it's given instructions for a special font or code file, which then translates the information from your document to come out in a readable manner. So, I want you to think back now and see if you can remember a time when you may have interrupted a print job by suddenly turning off the printer or even your computer. I bet you have that moment in your mind right now, don't you?! When you happen to stop the flow of the print job, the printer still goes on to print out the "raw text" from your document, but the results from that are never pretty. When you stopped the printing, the printer lost its code file and basically, had nothing else to do but print out a bunch of gibberish you just can't understand. It will then continue to do that until you stop it. So, what can you do to make the madness end? Well, the first thing you should do is check for any queued print jobs. If there are any, there should be a printer icon in your system tray. It may have a question mark on it, because it doesn't know what to do next. Double click that icon and the printer status box will open. Right click on any pending print jobs and choose Delete to cancel them completely. You can also click on the Print file and choose Cancel All Documents. (By the way, make sure your printer is turned off when you do this part). Now, you can turn your printer back on and print out a test page to make sure it's working properly. If you're still not satisfied, the next best thing to do is uninstall your printer software and try redoing it. You can uninstall it by going to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and find your printer in the list that comes up. Click on the Remove button and you'll be all set. Next, be sure you restart your computer and then start all over by reinstalling the printer software that came with your printer when you first bought it. Now, if you're still having trouble after you do all of that, you may need to contact some further help. There could be a basic hardware problem or there could be some trouble that lies even further than that. Look in your printer's manual and find a customer support telephone number. Then call it! The manufacturers know their printers the best and they should be able to help you get the problem solved for good. After that, you can go on living a printer gibberish free life. Find It Where? Did you know that when you do a Find/Replace in MS Excel, you can control how much of the file is searched? Yep, that's right! You can choose to work on a single worksheet or the entire workbook. It's all up to you. You just have to know where to look for the setting. To begin, you need to run the Find/Replace function as usual (Edit menu or for Excel 2007, the Home ribbon). Once you're in the Find and Replace window, you're looking for the Options button. That will expand the window to this: Take a look at the first new setting added to the window. See where it says "Within?" That's where you can choose from the drop down list. You'll find you have two choices: sheet and workbook. Make your selection and then you're back to normal business. Happy finding! ~ April

Updating Your iPod The music program of iTunes, widely used by most computer users today, exists only because of the iPod. As you may know, the iPod is a device that can store all of your music files, video files, podcasts, picture slideshows and much more. The iPod has essentially replaced the CD player and other devices used for music purposes. Instead, the iPod allows you to store a great deal of music on one small, portable device, ranging anywhere from 1 to over 100 GB. Now, it's important to keep your iPod up to date at all times in order to benefit from all the new features that are added on a regular basis. So, let's work on getting your iPod updated! In order to use an iPod, it must first be connected to your computer via a USB cord connection. Once it's connected, the iTunes program will immediately come up on your computer screen. Note: It's very important not to disrupt the USB connection between the computer port and the iPod device during the update process. Otherwise, the update may not go through properly. Once the iPod is connected, your computer will begin to charge its battery and any updates for your music, videos, etc. will be transferred to the device accordingly. A new category will also appear on the left hand side menu, called Devices, which is where you'll see the name you have given your iPod.
By clicking on your iPod's name under the Devices tab, the basic information for your device will be shown. On that page, you can update the device itself to a higher version or you can edit the available options. Those include: immediately opening the iTunes program when connecting the device to your computer, syncing only the checked songs and videos (more on that below), manually managing your music and videos and enabling disk use.
On the Music page (the first tab under the Library category), there's a checkmark located on the left hand side of each file next to the name. If the box is checked, that file will be transferred to your iPod. If you don't want to transfer a certain file onto the device, simply uncheck the box. The same concept applies for movie clips, podcasts and other related file types.
Additionally, all playlists will be transferred to your iPod as well. The six main playlists transfer directly, but the check/uncheck method can be used here as well. If you don't want certain songs on the playlists to be transferred, simply uncheck the box next to the song's name. If you have created any of your own playlists, those will also be uploaded to your iPod.
Also, whenever you make any updates or revisions to iTunes on your computer, those changes can be directly transferred to your iPod by simply connecting it to your computer. Your iPod should also be connected to your computer when you need to charge its battery. As you can see, updating your iPod is very easy. Plus, with all the latest technology for computer programs and devices, entertainment is more accessible than ever! ~ Sheida If you enjoy our tips, tell your friends. That's what keeps this newsletter growing.
New Gmail Security Here are some new features for those of you using the Gmail e-mail program! It looks like Google has been working very hard lately and they have built in a couple of new features for Gmail that give you more control over your e-mail account. The new features allow you to see a log of when your e-mail was last accessed and there's even one that allows you to log out of Gmail remotely. Here's what you need to know about the features and how they can make your e-mail service more secure. Here we go! If you log in to Gmail and look toward the bottom of the screen, you should see something that looks like this:
Do you see the part that says "Last Account Activity?" Click on the Details button within that to see your recent account activity. That little link will bring you to a screen that looks like this:
Now, all of this might seem like just a bunch of numbers, but I'll explain what it all means! The box that says "Concurrent Session Information" is a listing of other computers that are currently logged in to your Gmail account. Usually, that will be empty, but if you check your e-mail on multiple computers, there might be more than one. If you go to this screen and expect to see none listed, but you see more than that, it means another computer somewhere is logged in to your Gmail account. If you don't want that, just click on the button below that says "Sign out all other sessions." That button will log out any other computers connected to your account at the time. Note: If you see that happening often and you think someone else might be logging in to your account without your permission, you should change your password immediately. The second part of the screen listed as "Recent Activity" will show you which computers have logged in to your account recently. The IP address box shows you the Internet address of the computer that's logged in and it will also show the time the account was accessed. Note: If you don't recognize the log ins and you think someone else is logging in to your e-mail without your permission, again, reset your password immediately. I'm sure most of you will go to the screen and see nothing out of the ordinary, but it's nice to be able to check and ensure your e-mail is safe. One last note: This feature is brand new, so if you don't see it on your Gmail screen, don't worry. It will show up within the next week or so. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends! ~ Gary For stories, jokes, quotes and cartoons every day, sign up for our Just for Grins newsletter.
Why spend hours searching the Web for free background tiles for your Web pages when you can make your own? Not only is it free, but the application is very easy to use as well! When you start, you’ll be on the Image tab. Here you can select the image you want tiled on your background. There are tons of different shapes to choose from. Some examples are hearts, stars, swirls and trees. Once you’ve selected an image, you can start customizing how the end product will look. Head on over to the Colors tab and select the colors for your image. You have two color choices to make: what color your foreground will be and what color the background will be. It's as easy as that! The color selector is set on the foreground by default, but you can click on the color window next to it to choose a different shade. To change the color, use the rainbow slider next to the color window. You can then click on the background color to start working on that. Once you’ve selected your colors, you can go over to the Canvas tab. That's where you can select the texture for your background color. You can also change the opacity of the image you selected in the first step. You can make it more or less visible as you wish. Now, head on over to the Rotate tab! That section will let you rotate the image you selected into the position you want. Once everything is positioned and colored how you want it, click on the Apply Background link on the right side of the page. That allows you to preview the image you’ve made for your background. Under the Apply Background link, you will also find links to Download Your Image, which allows you to save it to your computer. You can also save it to My Patterns if you want. To do that, you’ll need to register, which is really easy to do. Simply fill out the form. Now, instead of searching the Web for tiled backgrounds, you can just make your own here. Check it out! ~ Amanda Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?
