Quick Tips

Firefox 3 Dos and Don'ts

By now, I'm sure you all know that Mozilla recently released the third version of their ever popular Web browser Firefox. Yes, Firefox 3 has been available for a couple of weeks now and while most people were in a big hurry to install it for themselves, there may be a few of you out there who are waiting just a little while longer. And that's exactly who this tip is for today. So, if you've yet to download Firefox 3, please listen up!

Installing a new version of a Web browser is a big thing and you shouldn't rush through it. You should prepare yourself and your computer beforehand in order to get the best results. With that said, here are a few dos and don'ts you should follow before installing Firefox 3. (Note: These are brought to you by one of our best WorldStart message board users: "HARLEY!")

First of all, don't install the new version over your old version. If you do that, you could end up losing all of your files and your extensions will probably not work. So, go ahead and uninstall the older version first. Then go and start the new install. Doing that ensures a clean install and a better working browser. You should also do a full back up of your files before you begin the install. That includes all your bookmarks, your log in information and anything else you think you're going to need. I know those are only a few suggestions, but that's pretty much all you need to do. If you take your time, you'll be able to enjoy Firefox 3 that much more!

HUGE 1 Day Sale!

Check out the four amazing items below - all are on sale today (06-26-2008) - and they have NEVER been cheaper! These are the kind of deals you'll brag to your friends about! Prices are guaranteed ONLY for today, so grab 'em while you can!

LOWEST PRICE EVER!!

2 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive - Just $14.97!!

WOW!!!

I can't believe the deal we got on Toshiba 2 Gig Flash Drives! And I am just so excited to share it with you! These are amazing, I never leave home without mine (Well, actually, both of mine!!)

It's so easy! You really use it just like a floppy drive, but only this one is much easier!!! All you have to do is just plug it into any USB port and then locate it as a drive under "My Computer". Once you have found it, all you have to do is drag and drop files or copy and paste them onto your Flash Drive. In addition, you can create folders, delete items, and edit stuff. This really allows me to stay organized!!!

I love these! They're perfect for transferring files from one computer to another (office to home or home to school are two great examples). I use one my mine to take my school work back and forth with me, and I use the other to take the office work back and forth with me!!!

Worried that is won't work with XP or Vista- DON'T FRET! If you have XP or Vista, setup is a breeze! Just plug it in and it's ready to go. It's so much faster and more reliable than a floppy, besides, floppy drives are a thing of the past!!! Have you noticed that most new computers don't even have a floppy drive anymore? If you are going to need to be transferring files- You definitely want to get yours hands on one of these!

Flash Drives are the only way I transport files anymore. No matter what they are, pictures, music, documents, this flash drive will store that information and allow you to bring it up on any computer, any where! Forget burning a CD!!! This route is so much easier!

Plus, this is 2GB, that's a TON of space. USB Flash drives are just so much better, I can't recommend 'em enough! It really makes it so quick and easy to move files around.

My only problem with most flash drives is that I am constantly misplacing the lid!!! But on the brightside this awesome flash drive is "lidless" so you don't lose the cap . The cover just slides over (while still attached) so you can easily access the USB port and then easily close it back up for storage! I'm so happy about this, I know I've ruined more than one flash drive while it was floating around in my bag without the cover ;-( And it was horrible to know that all those files were lost!!!

Again, for this sale these are just $14.97 and US shipping is FREE! These are no tiny flash drives - these are 2GB!! Normally the retail price is between $30-$50!!! WOW! You better get to the site quick, because these will sell out in no time! HURRY!

The Best Backup Program EVER!

Makes Keeping Your Computer Backed Up SIMPLE!

Incredibly Easy To Use!

Automatically Takes Care Of Everything!

Ya know, we hear it from people all the time, "I'm so upset - my computer crashed and I lost all of my stuff! My photos are gone! My work documents are history! Everything is trashed - I wish I would have backed up!"

Here in the digital age, backing up isn't just important - it's absolutely CRITICAL! Truth is, most of us just don't do it enough - And sadly, I include myself in that category. It's just such a hassle to remember to backup, ya know?

Well, I found a gem of a little program for you! It's called PC Backup and you're absolutely gonna LOVE this! It makes backing up effortless! Really! Just set it up and let it work in the background!

How's it work? Couldn't be easier! Just tell it what files or folders you want to backup. For most people, just having it backup your My Documents folder is probably all you need, but you can add whatever you like! Keep just one file backed up, keep selected files backed up, or keep every file on your system backed up! It's easy, only takes a minute!

Next, tell it where to backup to. I personally use an external hard drive, but a large memory card, flash drive, or even a separate internal hard drive will work. All depends on how much data you have to backup.

Finally, have it do the first backup. That's it! You're already an expert! Nothin' to it!

Oh, and talk about automatic backups! WOW! THAT'S the reason I LOVE this software! For your future backups, you can have it set to run when Windows starts and then run an automatic backup every so often. I have mine set for every hour, but you can have it do backups every minute, every 3 hours, once a day, once a week - Whatever!

Yeah, yeah, I know what you're thinking- Having it backup all the time would make the poor computer work constantly, but it doesn't! Why? This can do Incremental Backups! That means that when it goes to do a backup, it ONLY backs up new or changed files! Saves IMMENSE amounts of time! My favorite feature!!!!!

Here's an example! Say you have 100 files in a folder and between backups you change one file and add another. Rather than recopying ALL the files, it simply adds the new file and updates the changed one - two files written, 99 left alone! Smart eh? Instead of several minutes (or hours, depending on your file sizes / numbers), this is done in seconds! See why I love this one?

PLUS this backups up the full files - it doesn't "hide" them in some kind of weird compressed archive that you HAVE to use the program to open - all your files are completely usable AS THEY ARE in your backup location! Why is this important? Think about this - What happens if your computer crashes and you can't find the disk for your backup software to reinstall it?? With software that uses a special only-works-with-our-backup-software kind of file, you MUST use that backup software to retrieve your files! Yikes! With this, you'll still have your files - all 100% usable and ready to go!

I tell ya, this is the way backup programs SHOULD be! Easy to use, working in the background, and not taking up any resources! PERFECT! I don't know why this hasn't been done before! It's just GREAT!!!!

Your cost? Just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE! Spectacular deal on what's possibly the easiest, most elegant backup solution I've come across! Take a look:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4302

PS - It's not a matter of IF you're going to need a backup, it's WHEN (and we both know that's true!) This is an affordable, easy to use program that does the job without the hassle! Set it up once, and compute in blissful confidence that YOU are one of the few who are backing up! Isn't it worth $10.97 to make sure your files are safe? (Trust me, it will be worth 20X that amount to you if you don't backup and your data is lost !!!)

This price will increase to $12.97 soon!

Computers 101

Q:
I feel like I use my mouse too often and I was just wondering if there was an easy way I could cut back. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for all your help!

A:
I know exactly what you mean! I often feel like I use my mouse too often too. It just becomes so redundant going back and forth between my keyboard and mouse. By the end of the day, my poor little arm is tired out! I'm sure you and I aren't the only ones who feel that way either. So, if you feel like you use your mouse too much, keep reading for a simple cure. I promise you're going to love this one!

Now, before I go any further, I want to make it perfectly clear that I'm not trying to push keyboard shortcuts on you, because I know those can be hard to learn and remember. I'm talking about all the times you use your mouse for the most common tasks on your computer. For example, any time you change a setting on your PC, you have to press OK for it to take effect, right? Isn't it a little repetitive to have to press that button every single time? Wouldn't it be nice if your mouse would automatically do it for you?

Well, it's possible and here's how! You just have to enable the "snap to" feature for your mouse. To do so, go to Start, Control Panel and click on the Printers and Other Hardware link. Choose the Mouse link and then click on the Pointer Options tab. The second choice there is Snap To. Checkmark that box and click OK.

So, from now on, your mouse pointer will automatically move to the default button in any dialogue box. Every time you're doing something on your computer, the mouse pointer will take care of the finishing touches for you and you won't have to worry about moving your hand back over to your mouse. This feature also helps to eliminate wrist injuries, such as carpal tunnel, because you don't have to use your mouse quite so much. And let's be honest, who can argue with that?!

Now, go on and snap to it, my friends!

MS Office

Customizing "My Places"

Before we get started, I'd like to note that this tip is not for MS Office 2007. Please check in tomorrow for comparable information on those programs.

When you go to save or open files in a program from Microsoft's Office Suite, have you ever noticed the icons on the left side of the window? You know, the column labeled "Look in."

Ever wish you could alter that list to make it more useful?

If you like that idea and you have a newer version of Microsoft's Office Suite, you're in luck, because altering that list is quick, easy and exactly what we're going to discuss today!

You'll need to get to a window that uses the list, so go to the Open dialogue window: File menu, Open choice.

In the center, locate and select a folder you'd like to add to the list.

Now, go to the Tools menu, Add to My Places choice.

At this point, you won't see a change, but believe me, the list is different.

What the program did was add your new location to the bottom of the list, so you'll need to use the down arrow to find it.

I know you're probably thinking this isn't very helpful if you have to scroll down each time to use the location (I'd have to agree), so locating the new folder in the list is the first step in moving it toward the top.

Once you've found your folder, right click on it and choose Move Up from the menu.

The Move Up option will slide the location one spot up, so you'll need to repeat this until you've got the folder high enough in the list to meet your needs.

Right click and select Small Icons from the menu if you have a lot of folders and would like more to be displayed at one time.

You also might note that in the same right click menu, there are other options, such as Remove and Rename. I'm sure you can figure those out for yourself!

One more interesting fact: the changes you make will appear in all of your MS Office programs, so investing time now to make quality changes is definitely time well spent.

You can use this tip to tailor the list and really make it your own!

Tip of the Day

Security Warning: Exiting Explorer

Unfortunately, there are some ignorant people in the world today and most of them are on the Internet. Recently, a cruel Internet prank surfaced that preys on just about anyone. But if you know what the prank is, you won’t fall for it, so please keep reading to learn how you can keep yourself protected!

The prank involves a "cool trick" that can be done by clicking on the Start button, holding down Ctrl + Shift and right clicking the space between your username and profile picture in Windows Vista. If you test it out, you’ll find that a new option is revealed since you pressed Ctrl + Shift. Now, whatever you do, do not click on Exit Explorer! If you don’t know what you’re doing, you could stop parts of your computer from working (such as Windows Explorer, which is one of the backbones of the Windows operating system).

If it's too late and you think you already fell for the prank, here’s what you can do:

1.) Press Ctrl + Alt + Del.

2.) Click Start Task Manager.

3.) Click on the Applications tab.

4.) Click New Task (at the bottom of the box) and type in "Explorer." You should now be good to go once again.

This is something not a lot of people know about, so be sure to warn all your friends about it too. Stay safe!

Today's Feature

Glary Utilities

Today, I have a great utility program for you that is absolutely free, but before I get into that, I'd like to talk a little bit about utilities. There are so many utilities out there these days and it can be pretty overwhelming to try and decide which one is the best. In my opinion, none of them will ever correct everything on a computer. No matter what utility you use for registry cleanup, spyware removal, disk cleaning or file recovery, there will never be a utility that's absolutely perfect in its ability to help your system. That's why I recommend you have more than one utility program to make sure everything on your system is as good as can be.

Usually, the best way to do that is to have one you use as a main utility program and a second one to use as a backup. The main utility program should be one that runs all the time. It will be the one that runs the regular maintenance on your system and it will probably not be of the free download variety. One that WorldStart sells is System Mechanic. It's a main utility type of program that runs all the time and it keeps everything up to date.

The secondary utility should be one that doesn't run all the time on your computer. It should be one you open and use occasionally to clean up anything the main utility may have missed. This week's free download is a great secondary utility program. It's called Glary Utilities and it has a ton of features for cleaning and optimizing your system. It's very easy to use and it doesn't run in the background on your computer. You open it and run the parts the way you want, when you want. Some other features of Glary Utilities include: file recovery, shortcut fixer, file encrypting, memory optimizer, registry cleaner, disk cleanup and many more.

You can download Glary Utilities for yourself right here. Just click on the Download Now button to get started.

Note: While it's a good idea to have more than one utility program, please do not confuse this with antivirus and firewall software. You should never have more than one firewall or antivirus program on your computer. Enjoy!
