Quick Tips

Vista Program Compatibility: An Update

As you may remember, last week, I wrote an article about the Windows Vista Program Compatibility Wizard you can use if you're having trouble getting some of your programs to work on your Vista computer. (If you missed out on that tip, you can read it right here). After it appeared in the newsletter, I received several e-mails and even a few phone calls with questions about it. It seemed like a lot of you were having trouble finding the feature, so I thought I'd take some time today to clear all of that up. Here we go!

After so many of you told me you couldn't find the Program Compatibility Wizard, I got to thinking that maybe it wasn't available with every edition of Vista. I tested the tip on a Vista Home Basic computer and it worked just fine, so I thought maybe it wouldn't work for everyone. I thought that was strange, but I know it has happened with other things, so it was possible. But then I started researching it a little more and luckily, that's not the case at all. Keep reading as we solve this mystery!

In order to find the Program Compatibility Wizard, you have to be in a certain Control Panel view. In Vista, there is a Control Panel Home view and a Classic view and you must be in the Control Panel Home view to find the Wizard. If you happen to be in the Classic view, you won't be able to find it. So, to check on that, go to Start, Control Panel and look in the top left hand corner. You will see a dot next to whichever view you're in. If you're not in the right one, simply click on Control Panel Home and you'll be taken to the correct spot. You can then go to Programs and click on the option that says "Use an older program with this version of Windows." Then just follow along with the wizard and you'll be all set. I hope this clears up all of the confusion!

Computers 101

Q:
I started up my computer this morning and all of my icons were gone! What could have happened? How can I get them back? Please help!

A:
Oh my, what an unpleasant surprise! I can only imagine how lost you must feel. I mean, we all depend on our desktop icons to get us through the day, so it just seems impossible to live without them. And I'm talking about major icons like My Computer, My Documents, My Network Places and so on. Those are a few of the icons you probably use on a regular basis, so if they're not there, what are you supposed to do? Well, the best answer is, "Get them back!"

Now, there are a couple of different ways you may have lost your icons. They could have disappeared when you installed a certain program or even when you upgraded to a new operating system. Either way, you need them, so let's find them again! To enable those icons and more, right click on your desktop and choose Properties. Click on the Desktop tab and hit the Customize Desktop button. Next, under the General tab, check off any of the icons you want to appear on your desktop.

Once you do that, they will all be returned to your desktop in full view. You can choose from the icons of My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places and Internet Explorer. Now, on the other hand, you may want to take some of those icons off your desktop. If that's the case, just uncheck them and they will be out of your way. Easy enough, don't you think?!

MS Office

Quick Click Customization

As you may recall, the other day, we went over how to find the Page Setup window with just a quick double click. Well, that prompted me to start double clicking elsewhere to see what I could find!

Happily, I found yet another stop on the express train! This time, we're looking at a fast and easy way into the Customize window.

First, if you're an MS Office 2007 user, keep in mind that this tip only works in Outlook 2007. Unfortunately, the ribbons in the other programs cannot be customized. I'm sorry for the bad news, but it can't be helped.

As for the rest of you, I was able to get this to work in MS Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Access and Excel. Basically, it works across the board!

I don't know about you, but I like to see all of the buttons that are available to me. To do that, you have to sit them side-by-side, which doesn't work very well, because the program hides the buttons as it tries to make everything fit on a single line. Because of that, I tend to stack the toolbars that are visible in my MS Office program windows.

The result of that is a lot of free space on the right side.

So, there in the free space is where I double clicked and found today's tip!

All you need to do is double click in the unused space next to a toolbar and the Customize window will instantly pop open.

Now, that's what I call maximum effect with minimum memorization!

The Easy Way To Build Your Own Website!

Create An Amazing Website In No Time!

Finally - Create Your Own Personal Or Business Site!

No Programming Required -

If You Can Use A Word Processor, You Can Do This!

WOW! We had an amazing response to this last Friday and over the weekend! Thank You to the hundreds and hundreds who ordered! You'll LOVE it too! If you've ever thought about a web site, this is one offer you don't want to miss! Check it out!

Oh, this is just FANTASTIC!! I'm so excited - we've just found an amazing program that lets anyone and everyone create their own website! It's super easy to use and no web programming knowledge is necessary at all! If you can use a word processor, you can use our newest program - WebEasy 6!

We've had version 4 and 5 and they were good, but this version 6 really takes it up to the next level! WOW! We're talking everything you need in order to create an amazing, professional-looking website! You'll be online with your own personal or business site in no time!

First off, I want to stress you don't need ANY background in HTML, JAVA, or web programming - if you can use a word processor you can do this! It includes a whopping 120 pre-made, professional-looking templates! You're bound to find several that are just perfect for your needs, and if you don't they are easy enough to modify! It's amazing how well done this is!

As for the type of sites this can do, well - your imagination is really the limit! You can make a simple personal site to show off your family photos, you can build an information site about your favorite subject, you can create an online business complete with shopping cart, you can put together a "group" site complete with calendars, news, schedules, whatever! Pretty much anything you can think of, this can do - and probably already has a killer template ready to go!

Oh, and using it is sooooo simple - all the tools are really easy to understand, so it's simple to add graphics, photos, text, flash animations, etc. Oh, get this - it includes an amazing 85,000 different photos, clipart, buttons, borders, animations, music, sound effect and more! Talk about having a custom site huh! WOW!!!

What if you don't want to use templates at all? What if you're a more of a "from scratch" kind of designer? Well, once you see how easy it is to create a site from scratch, you may decide to go it alone! The tools are so easy to use - most of it is a matter of drag and drop! So, start from scratch, or use a template - either way the site you create is going to blow people away!

OK, all that's great, but what do you do after it's built? Well, you can host your website though the publisher (a 1 click operation - now that's handy), upload to any number of free sites available online, or go for a high-quality paid hosting service of your choice. Easy!

Once you're up and running, how do you let everyone know you're there? HA! This has you covered there too! This includes tools to help you optimize your site for a high rank in the search engines - and it helps you to submit your site to all the major search engines! It does it all!

Now, most web site software is really expensive - GoLive and Dreamweaver both retail for $400 and MS Frontpage / Expressions is still expensive at $100! Why pay that much when this does pretty much the same thing?

Your cost? Get this - just $14.97 ($50 retail) and US shipping is FREE! Is that amazing or what? It's a fantastic deal on some of the easiest, most powerful web creation software on the market - give it a try - you'll love it too!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4365

PS - Please note that this was a limited quantity deal, so once these are gone, we're not sure when or if we'll be able to get more! Stuff has been sellin' like crazy lately, so get to the site early to get in on this one!

ALL CAPS

Have you ever received an e-mail that was in all CAPS? If so, how did you like it? Was it like the person who sent it was screaming at you? And if you check out the tip we have on our homepage today, you will learn all about it!

Coloring Page

Do you have a lot of kids in your life? Maybe they're your own or perhaps they're your grandchildren. It's called Coloring Page and it's filled with fun activities for young children. And who knows, maybe you'll find something there for yourself as well!

Tip of the Day

Online News

Did you know you can read pretty much everything you read in a newspaper on the Internet? Well, now that you know, you can! There are several Web sites online that have daily news from around the world, from within your state and even within your city or town. Let's check it out!

For starters, sites such as www.msn.com, www.yahoo.com and www.google.com have all kinds of news. They offer everything from world news to sports to entertainment. Some Web sites even have other news categories, such as business, health and technology.

All you have to do when you go to one of those sites is look for the News link and click on it. That link will take you to the main news section on the site and you can then search through the stories to find something you'd like to read. Some of the Web sites even offer a place for you to enter in your zip code so that you can read your local news. Most of the sites usually have pictures as well!

You can also go to your newspaper's Web site to read their news. If you happen to miss a newspaper one day or somehow misplace it, you can always log in to your newspaper's site to read that day's articles. (The Web address should be in the newspaper somewhere). Originally used pictures also accompany most of those stories as well.

It's a really cool idea if you like reading things on your computer instead of in little black print on paper. You can grab your morning coffee, log on to your computer and catch up on the daily news!

Plus, if you register for an account, you can even keep track of the tutorials you’ve looked at and the ones you still need to see. It’s very easy to register too. On the main page, you’ll also find the 15 Newest Tutorials. When I visited, there was an excellent tutorial on learning the interface for Photoshop, which can be quite overwhelming if you've never used it before.

You’ll also notice some links beneath the articles. They are: Rating, Clicks, Comments, Save, Share and Report. If you want to save an article, click on the Save link and it will display another link you can use to save the article.

If you’ve registered, you’ll find the articles you save under the Account Name tab. The menu for that section includes the following areas: Profile, Submitted, Saved, Comments and Tutorial Comments.
